A new Goodman unit was installed today in Madison Park, a quaint little area in Chicago’s famous Hyde Park located 1 block east of President Obama’s home.

Our lead technician went out on Friday for our new customers Cliff and Gina and determined that an their old Bryant 2 speed ac condensing unit compressor was bad. We gave them the option of replacing the compressor or replacing the entire unit with Goodman’s GSC 13 SEER line. “We are pleased that they opted for the new unit for several reasons” says Mitchell Moore, service manger at Citywide Supply & Service. “First of all it was a wise economical choice considering that the compressor replacement would have far exceeded the cost of the entire unit replacement. The replacement unit is a 13 SEER unit which is what any reputable ac company in Chicago would recommend given the long payback period for higher efficiency equipment in the Chicago area. Higher efficiency makes sense where the cooling seasons are longer and hotter like in the southern region of the country. The new Goodman unit carriers a 10 year parts warranty with it, which is one of the many reasons we have moved our product line from Bryant to Goodman”. Our new customers were savy in their new purchase and asked all the right questions. Will the unit perform as well as the old one? Yes it will. In fact it will perform better than the old unit due to the fact that the old unit had worn valves and debris loaded in the condenser coil which may have derated it’s nameplate efficiency rating by about 3 SEER points. A 3 ton unit will provide the same amount of cooling in a 13 SEER model as it will with a 17 SEER model. The newer unit will perform better because of the condition of the valves and coil. “It truly was a pleasure to work for Cliff and Gina. They are the nicest people you would ever want to meet. “It makes our job soooo much easier when the customers are as nice as these folks are.” says Mitch Jr an assistant on the job that is in his 2nd year of a 4 year apprenticeship program at Citywide Supply & Service. Cliff also raised a good point that we neglected to address prior to the installation. It was an important subject about sound. In order to make units quieter, mfg’s use what is known as a “sound blanket”. It helps muffle the sound of the compressor where more than 80% of the noise frequencies are generated. We strongly are against “sound blankets” for the sole reason that we believe it sacrifices the longevity of the compressor’s life. “It has been my experience in the 26 years in the business that a compressor with a “sound blanket” will fail years before one that does not given the same variables such as superheat, proper voltage, proper maintenance, and proper charge. “I believe that it causes the motor to run slightly hotter with the insulation blanket and thus dies prematurely.” says Mitchell Moore. “We put them on if the customer insists that they want it as quiet as possible but we do it with warning!”
This particular installation needed a few extras to achieve optimum performance which included a time delay on break. This insures the compressor will not try to restart immediately after it has been turned off. This is not good for the compressor and it is just a liitle more insurance for a small price. We like to add them on all our new installs. If you look closely you will notice the small square control in the picture with a small red knob on it. It is to the right of the components on the wall of the control panel. This timer is adjustable from .03 seconds to 10 minutes. We like to set ours at 2 minutes. We also installed a PTC relay/capacitor control to overcome the high head pressure on a TXV system which is also know as a Hard TXV system. This control also helps in peak demand conditions which we know we get alot of in Chicago by overcoming low voltage conditions. I am confident that our new customers will enjoy years of comfort and reliability from their new Goodman air conditioning system. Should they happen to have a problem they will be glad to know that they have a 10 YEAR parts warranty that has them covered!
