When we do a compressor change out on an ac condensing unit we match the exact compressor btu’s which is critical to optimum performance from your system. Repair vs Replace
This insures that you will get full rated voltage start time after time with no drops due to wear on the old cap. It is very inexpensive to replace but it amazes me how many techs DO NOT do this. We also replace the
24 volt contactor with a new one. I have seen contacts severely pitted on contactors that were only 1 year old. In fact I recommend changing contactors on units that are 5 years old and up if they have the original contactor in them from the factory, I replace the contactor with a 2 pole rather than the cheap 1 pole that most mfg’s use these days. for a few dollars more it’s CRAZY not to. Once you have a brand new compressor installed in your older ac condensing unit there is not much more that can go wrong with the outdoor part of the system. You have a fan motor that is rather inexpensive to repair should it go bad and you have the coils themselves which if in really bad shape could potentially leak…which is rare. The condition of the coils is important also. If the coil fins are bent up really bad it becomes very difficult to straighten them out. This causes nothing but problems and serious consideration should be given to replacing the condenser. Again if the coil/fins look good why not save yourself some money and have the ac condenser rebuilt. You receive the same warranty as the factory gives on most standard ac units…. 5 years. With the new laws governing that you MUST install 13 SEER or higher efficiency equipment , why not look at your other options. New units are not always the beat way to go.

A Few tips for taking care of your air conditoner this summer. It is extemely important to keep the filter clean which insures proper air flow. When your air flow is restrcted it causes the freon or refigerant to come back to the compressor in a liquid state. This is the number one cause of compressor failure. Depending on the severity of the liquid it may cause bearing failure byu washing out the bearing oil with refigeratnt or it will at the very least cause the rings to damage by “wash out”. This is when the liwuid washes away the oil that is used to lubricate the compressor moving parts.
When you start your air conditioner for the first time you may want to insure that you have enough freon in it AS SOON as you start it. Let the unit run for several minutes and then feel the larger of the 2 copper lines that are going to the unit outside. There may be some black insulation on the line. Simply move it back and grab the copper line with your hand. It should be cold, as in “beer can cold”. The tempreture of a can of beer when you pull it out of a cooler full of ice on a hot summer day. If it is not then you need to get some pressure readings off the unit. It may very well be low on freon. Freon still leaks out in the winter time. In fact in some cases I have seen service valves on ac units only leak when the temp outside is below freezing due to the rubber o rings swelling and causing the leak. There is a bulletin on this for particular Goodman AC units. Low freon can and will cause comporessor damage if not taken care of. There are many signs to look for and many things that can go wrong woth your ac over the winter. If you think something is not right when you turn on your ac for the first time then chances are your right.
